Life Skills
Budgeting, cooking, job readiness, and preparing for independent living.
I AM SHE stands beside women preparing to leave or who have aged out of foster care, and women who are unhoused and working to get back on their feet.
Their journeys may be different, but each deserves practical tools, dependable support, and people who care about what comes next.
Explore our programsHelp women move forwardWe help women turn uncertainty into a plan—and that plan into steps toward stability and independence.
Through mentorship, job readiness, interview preparation, and connections to trade and career training, we help women recognize their strengths, explore opportunities, and prepare for what comes next. Life skills build a foundation for managing money, caring for themselves, and navigating everyday responsibilities with greater confidence.
That support reaches into the details that can make moving forward possible: preparing a résumé, practicing for an interview, finding work clothing, learning to budget and cook, and accessing hygiene kits and first-home essentials.
Along the way, women have mentors who check in, people to turn to when challenges arise, and a community that celebrates the first interview, the new job, and the progress others might never see.
Every woman deserves to be seen, supported, and equipped for what comes next.
I AM SHE serves women who need practical skills, resources, and a dependable community as they work toward stability and independence.
Our work begins with women preparing to leave or who have aged out of foster care. We also support women who are unhoused, including those with no foster-care background, who need practical tools and dependable support to rebuild their lives.
Support includes help preparing for independent living and employment, connecting with community resources, and accessing essentials such as hygiene supplies and work clothing.
Our work is guided by mentorship, independent-living skills, career preparation, community connections, and access to everyday essentials.
We are working toward a daytime housing resource center and safe overnight housing opportunities that support women as they build stability and independence.
We envision a welcoming place to navigate housing options, develop practical skills, connect with trusted support, and work toward personal, educational, and career goals.

Incorporated in Virginia on September 3, 2021, and based in Richmond, I AM SHE Inc. is a nonprofit organization led by Shante Thompson.
Our mission is to equip women preparing to leave or who have aged out of foster care, as well as women who are unhoused, with practical skills, mentorship, essential resources, and a community that cares.
Through life skills, job readiness, interview preparation, connections to training, and essential supplies, we help women take practical steps toward employment, stability, and independence. Moving forward takes more than a list of resources: it takes someone who checks in, guidance through challenges, and people who celebrate each step forward. Our mentors, professionals, and business owners put their knowledge and resources into service of that mission.
The lotus grows through muddy waters and opens into a bloom. We chose it as I AM SHE’s signature flower because it represents resilience, growth, and the possibility of a new beginning.
For us, the lotus is a reminder that a woman’s circumstances do not define her worth or limit what she can become. With practical tools, opportunity, and a community that cares, she deserves room to grow and build her next chapter.
Our programs support women preparing to leave or who have aged out of foster care, and women who are unhoused. We focus on everyday skills, preparation for employment, and dependable relationships that help women build a more stable future.

Connect about our programsOur vision is a community where women transitioning from foster care and women who are unhoused can build confidence, find dependable support, and work toward stability and independence.
A community grounded in respect, where women’s different backgrounds and experiences are valued.
Encouragement to explore goals, recognize strengths, and take meaningful steps toward a new chapter.
A commitment to building relationships and sharing knowledge that can help women move forward.
Access to resources matters. So does having people who check in, celebrate your progress, and help you feel that you belong.
Women leaving foster care and women who are unhoused need more than a list of resources. Dependable relationships, everyday encouragement, and practical skills can help women take their next steps. Our vision is to build lasting community support as they work toward stability and independence.
We support one another. We share what we know. We help the next woman move forward.
Grow with usMost of I AM SHE’s mentors are business owners and career-focused women who bring professional knowledge, practical skills, and lived experience to our mission. We use those strengths to help women prepare for employment, develop life skills, explore opportunities, and build confidence.
We also welcome women whose strengths come from other paths. You do not need a business, a title, or a perfect life to contribute. Your experience, skills, and willingness to support someone else matter.
We are part of the community we serve—and our mentors deserve support, too.
Through business think tanks, career conversations, skill sharing, and goal-setting sessions, we help one another work toward our own goals. We exchange ideas, offer honest feedback, celebrate progress, and encourage each other through challenges.
That is our pay-it-forward approach: we grow through the support we receive and use what we learn to help someone else move forward.
We bring that same commitment to women preparing to leave or who have aged out of foster care, and women who are unhoused. Our support combines useful skills with dependable relationships—people who share what they know, check in, and care about what comes next.
No perfection required. We each have something to offer, and we each have room to grow.
